On June 26, the 2015 Food Safety Risk Communication Seminar hosted by China Food and Drug Administration was held in Beijing.

Officials and representatives from China and the USA food regulatory authorities, academia, non-governmental organizations and media attended the Seminar. and three topics were discussed at the event, including encouraging food industry to play active roles in food safety risk communication, improving communication and collaboration among the government, media, scientists and consumers and developping food safety promotion initiatives.

Mr. Ruan Guangfeng, the Director of Communication Programs of China Food Information Center (CFIC), was invited to the Seminar and delivered a speech titled “The roles of third party in food safety risk communication”.

He suggested that the roles of third party should be fully brought into play and a cooperation and collaboration system of third parties with authority, credibility and reliability should be established. Thus, positive public opinions can be directed and biased or even pseudo-scientific information from media can be reduced. Meanwhile, it can also prevent wilful exaggeration of individual food safety issue.

It is widely agreed that the food industry should improve risk management and staff training, initiate food safety risk communication with consumers and enhance communication with the government, food risk communication organizations and the media. It is important that the food industry should be aware of the main responsibility to reduce food safety risk and ensure the quality of products.
