The Seminar on Food Safety Risk Communication

The Seminar on Food Safety Risk Communication, targeting at food industries,  was jointly held by CFIC and Foodmate Net on Aug.28 in Yantai, Shandong province. Officials and scientist from CFDA and National Centre for Food Safety Risk Assessment attended the session. It was once again a good chance for food industries getting better understanding of food safety policy and scientific developments and communicating their concerns with the representatives of government and academia.



Mr. Liu Songtao, Director of Dept. of Food Safety Supervision of CFDA gave the speech on Information Openness and Risk Communication of Food Safety Inspection. He highlighted the importance of scientific communication on the emerging food issues, especially a balanced interpretation of the inspection data. Mr. Liu also addressed of CFDA recent efforts on building effective risk communication system and channels. He commended CFIC’s valuable contribution to sustain this third-party platform for the governments, academia, media and producers in this aspect



Mr. Bao Dayue, the Chief Consultant of CFIC, spoke at the seminar that promoting food safety risk communication will contribute to a sound and scientific public perception and that are necessary for the health development of food industry. He called on the active participation of all stakeholders around.



Mr. Li Yuanzhao, the Chairperson of Foodmate Net (www.foodmate.net) also briefed on the services and programs offered by this website and the initiatives involved in food safety risk communication.



Dr. Wang Lihua from National Centre for Food Safety Risk Assessment gave a detailed introduction of the new rule on the Application Procedure of Food Additives in China.



In conclusion, Mr. Ruan Guangfeng, Director of Communication Programs of CFIC, remarked on the initiatives that CFIC had undertaken in the aspect of public education, research projects, training workshops and international collaborations. He encouraged the representatives from food industry to contribute their suggestions and comments on how CFIC could provide services in food safety risk communication.

This seminar was one of a series of training courses targeting food industries in food safety risk communication. It is anticipated to have more topic-oriented sessions and a broader involvement of food risk communicators in the future.
